Calling the Shots are running a free, two-day training course at Bristol’s Bottle Yard Studios that aims to expose potential new entrants to the Film and TV production industries to what it’s like working on a drama set.

About the course

The Bristol Creative Skillset boot camp is an intensive 2-day course for new entrants who want to work in high-end TV Drama and Film Production. Participants will learn about the process of making Film and TV dramas and the roles within a production crew. The course will give participants a grounding in the practicalities and realities of working in the industry and an understanding of entry routes.

Funded by Creative Skillset, this two-day workshop takes place on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th October, 2018. The boot camp will include a visit to a working production set, with a chance to try out a variety of behind-the-camera roles. There will also be a tour of the facilities at the Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, looking at set building workshops, costume and make up and a range of workshops looking at what it’s like to work as a freelance.

Targetted at over 21s with a range of backgrounds, the workshop aims to give participants a real understanding of the job roles that exist in the TV Drama and Film production sector

This free to attend course is funded by a combination of National Lottery funds awarded to Creative Skillset by the British Film Institute to deliver its Future Film Skills programme and receipts from high-end TV drama productions that have contributed to the High-end TV Skills Fund.

Previous trainees

“I found the HETV boot camp incredibly helpful and got a real feel for the industry and what it entails for certain jobs. Since my participation in HETV boot camp I have got onto a 6-week intensive theatre set design and prop making course over summer 2018. The Bristol boot camp concreted my decision and interest in exploring set design as my career path in theatre, TV and Film.  ”

Sasha Knezevic,  January 2018 Creative Skillset boot camp

“After the boot camp, I applied for Skillset’s trainee finder scheme, and was lucky enough to get a place. As a result of this, I am currently working on The Spanish Princess at the Bottle Yard, so yes, the boot camp definitely was a positive impact!”
