JOIN THE BFI FILM ACADEMY ONLINE ANIMATION CAMP
Are you interested in stop-motion animation?
Are you aged 16-19?
The BFI FILM ACADEMY ONLINE ANIMATION CAMP could be perfect for you!
Applications are now open for our eighth week-long animation camp, supported by the British Film Institute and the National Lottery.
The BFI Film Academy offers opportunities for ambitious 16-25 year olds to get to know more about film and how to make a career in the screen industries. Learn more about the BFI Film Academy here.
Our camp will take place online in February 2021. The agenda is as follows.
Saturday, 6th February – the briefing afternoon – meet our team and get an overview of the main camp week.
Monday, 15th to Friday, 19th February – a week of online workshops and masterclasses exploring professional animation practice and techniques.
We’ll then give you two weeks to work at home on a personal animation project and we will all get together online again on Friday 5th March for an online screening and celebration of the work everyone has produced.
Delivered in partnership with Oscar-winning Aardman Animations and the University of the West of England’s School of Animation, our course offers 25 places for young people to develop their practice and work on personal animation projects. If you are selected, we’ll send you a kit of materials and give you support to work on your own animation project at home, sharing what you make with everyone taking part.
We will focus on ‘lens-based’ animation, using phone cameras to shoot 3D models or 2D artwork. Participants will learn about every stage of production – covering story development, model making, animation skills and filming techniques. We will also be offering sessions on careers advice and master-classes with practicing industry professionals from the Bristol animation scene.
In line with the latest COVID-19 advice from the government, we have moved this course online for 2021. Normally, we run a week-long residential that enables participants to work in teams to create their own animated films. For our February 2021 camp, we’ll be posting out a kit of materials and equipment to all participants that will enable you to develop your own animation project and film it on your phone. We’ll provide you with a mentor and you’ll set your own learning objective for your personal animation project. If you need additional support or don’t have access to a smartphone, then let us know and we’ll be able to loan you other equipment.
Applications are open now, closing date for applications is Monday, 7th December 2020.
This course is open to all 16-19s from across the UK. We are looking for anyone, regardless of their background, with a passion to develop their skills in stop-motion animation.
The course costs £50. However, we do have a bursary scheme and many students can get their fees paid. See our FAQs to find out more.
