Overview
The University Of Bristol wanted to produce a film illustrating research from within the department of history.
CTS produced a 30-minute film, shot in China, Shanghai and Northern Ireland, exploring the extraordinary life and work of Sir Robert Hart, Inspector General of the Chinese Maritime Customs from 1857 till his death in 1912.
Drawing on unique photographic archive from the University’s Historic Photographs of China collection, the film charts the turbulent beginning to China’s “Century of Humiliation”.
I thought I was simply ‘commissioning a film’, but what I got was an engaged partner, and a productive relationship from which I learned an enormous amount – and through which we created a fine film.
